This superbly hand decorated Samurai themed chess set features two well known warlords of the period - Takeda Shingen who lived between 1521 and 1573 and Oda Nobunaga who was born in 1534 and died in 1582.

Based on the political, economic and military situation that existed in Japan in the sixteenth century, this themed chess set reflects the almost continuous state of warfare that existed during the Sengoku ear (1467-1568). Warlord battled warlord until the whole country was exhausted. Kyoto, the capital city, was virtually destroyed and the Shogun, local military governors or Daimyo, attacked and seized their neighbours' territory to expand their power and attempt to gain the title of Shogun for themselves.

The Daimyo imposed and enforced the laws of his province and often made strategic alliances for their familythrough marriage. An Okugata or 'honourable wife' was the key to many succesful power struggles. The Daimyo was also served by his Samurai, an elite warrior, who literally lived to serve his master and profited by success in battle. The Daimyo also encouraged Ninjas, shadowy figures cloted in black, to undertake covert spying missions and assassinations on his behalf.
